Underground Nuclear Shelter Steintorwall
Cold War at Hamburg Main Station
A nuclear shelter right next to Hamburg Main Station? Come and see for yourself. This three story bunker was built during World War II providing shelter for nearly 2500 people. Nearly forgotten after the war, it was remembered when the confrontation between the super powers was increasing during the Cold War. Reconstruction works started in 1964. By 1969 modern pressure doors, ventilation, filtering, emergency generators as well as new seats and beds had been installed providing shelter for 2702 people. The tour will give you a vivid impression of what staying in nuclear shelter would have been like.

Who we are
We are a non-profit association, researching and documenting the subterranean buildings in Hamburg. The organization records oral history, photo documentation and surveys the areas. We try to capture the full picture of the buildings below the ground. It is our mission to present our research to the public through events and guided tours of the buildings. On our tours you will see and learn about the equipment and history of the building. The local and historical context of these buildings will give you a deep insight into cold-war times in Germany and broaden your mind.
